K1 VISA

When I began this process I didn't even know a K-1 VISA existed. NOW, I know a K-1 VISA is a petition to bring your fiancé here ( into the United States ) with the intention of getting married and settling here. The paper work, so far, is not so bad, but the help I've really found has been through alt.visa.us.marriage-based and the various K-1 pages set up by others who have already been through or are in the middle of THE process. Of course, if you really want to know what's up, the K-1 FAQ page really covers the topic.

The K-1 Skinny

To start the K-1 VISA process, you, as the US citizen need to get certain forms from the INS. Don't try downloading them, have them mailed to you. I got doubles of everything so mistakes wouldn't result in waiting for another blank form to be mailed. I found the mailing speed OK.

Forms I acquired

G-325A (Biographic Information) - I got four. You need one for you and one for your fiancé.

I-129F (Petition for Alien Fiancé) - I got two. One is required.

M-378 (Color Photograph Specs) - Not really a form but instructions for how the TWO pictures of you AND your fiancé MUST look. From what I've gathered from the newsgroup, these photos are important to get right.

I-134 ( Affidavit of Support) - I got two. The dreaded money issue form.

ER-750 - Not really a form, nor did I get it from the INS. I copied it from here into MSWord. Filled in my name and printed it out. Then I signed it and sent it along. Apparently, can send photocopies of the info the INS requires along with this 'form' which in laymen's terms, that the photocopies are REAL and, if needed, you can send in the originals.

Forms I completed and sent in

1 G-325A for me - I attached my M-378 compliant photo's in an envelope with paper clips.

1 G-325A for Martha - Her M-378 compliant photo's were attached in an envelope same as mine.

2 complete sets of documents paperclipped together which included:
  • I-129F One original and one color photo copy.
  • ER-750 Printed out, signed and dated.
  • A letter describing how we met (answering the question on Line 19 of the I-129F. You MUST of met your intended fiancé within the last two years) and out intention to marry. Signed and dated.
  • A sheet describing the eight photos I sent.
  • Eight photos showing us together, color photocopied onto three sheets and labeled for the above sheet.
  • Color photocopy of my ( the US citizen's ) birth certificate.
  • Color photocopy of my passport ( probably not needed but who knows? ).
  • Color photocopy of two airline ticket receipts when I traveled to Indonesia and saw Martha.
  • B/W photocopy of an inteniarary matching one of the above tickets.
  • Four B/W photocopies of my telephone bills with the calls I made to Martha.
  • Two B/W photocopies of Western Union money transfers I made to Martha.
  • $95.00* US money order.

* Prices are based on when I sent in my petition (Late 1998). Including the wrong amount is one of the surest ways to delay processing of your petition.

It was all return receipt certified mailed to my nearest INS processing station. You should of received a form telling you where this station is.
